My brother collected these when I was a kid and I just loved the art work. I sort of "inherited" his issues when he lost interest and added to them. I haven't looked at them in a while - I remember nothing about the articles or stories - but that art work will be with me forever. This is a great sight.

In grade 2 I drew a hotrod van and my mother kept it. 6years later I was quite the artist (loved to draw cartoon type 4x4's and street machines.) My mother saw a issue of Cartoons on the shelf one day and thought I would be interested in it so she got it or me. Ever since I grab any copy that I come by. I happened to be surfing for Icons for windows and was on a hotrod icon site and seen the link for your site. wow a trip to the past. Thank you. Raz

I saw my first taste of CARtoons when I was going through my dads childhood things when I was in elementary school in the 1980's. I found my dads old comics and found two old magazines called Hot Rod Cartoons and Drag Cartoons. Both were so cool. I sti l have them and get them out occasionally. I found out that CARtoons was the same company and my dad got me a subscription in 1991. Unfortunately the magazine ended and my subscription didn't last long. I still have the magazines and plan on showing th m to my kids when they grow up. If it wasn't for CARtoons I don't think I would be the hot rod and street rod fan I am today. My first car was a 1973 Mustang Coupe and I am in the process aquiring a 1951 Chevy Truck 3 window. I'm glad I found this site and I hope you continue the great work.!!!

I actually was a runner up in the 86 iron on contest. Inspired by a trip to Daytona Beach. Good seeing a site to it. My initial reaction to Rogerio's work was that it was too busy, but I can say I appreciate something but not sure what. Put some misc. examples under artists and give one or two of his crazy work. I always be a cartoonist, however, I have "serioused up" somewhat after art school. good luck with the 'velle.

Comments:
My brother Dave and I grew up on CARtoons through our teen years (the '80s). To say that we eagerly awaited each new issue's arrival at the magazine racks would be a gross understatement - it was one of those events that we practically LIVED for. We dev ured the stories and art on each page, and saved all of the iron-ons, no matter how tempted we were to use them. When our interest began to run thin, we stopped buying them, but kept on reading our old issues. Eventually, we grew up and moved, and I too the mags with me. Our collection gathered dust for about ten years, until I recently unearthed them - their pages are now browned and wrinkled (they'll never fetch a 'Mint' price, for sure), and now I'm unsure whether to keep them in my already-stuffed ouse, or find a buyer and surrender a treasured part of my life. For a relatively obscure 'funny book' (compared to Mad and Cracked), it exerted a tremendous influence on us. Today, Dave is living a bit like Krass (and looking like him, too!) while resto ing a muscle car on his weekends off, and I (the un-mechanic extraordinare) still draw and sketch using ideas and techniques learned from the CARtoons artists. (It even gave me a semi-education about the Southern California area, which came in handy on a trip there back in '99.) Some folks here have suggested reviving the mag - I would buy it, but I doubt it could ever be as good as the original run. A big 'coffee-table' commemorative book would be a good way to immortalize CARtoons...or maybe an animat d or live-action K&B movie (Drew Carey IS Krass!) would work. Okay, now I'm getting crazy here...and I still have to decide what to do with my collection...so I'm outta here for now. Take care, fellow CARtooniacs.

Hey I enjoyed seeing your site, it brought back alot of memories of the issues I used to read when I was younger. I'm trying to find a drawing in cartoons of a 69 charger, much like the dukes of hazard. I used to own a car like that and I still cherish th memory of it. I would appreciate it if you have any info on which issue has one in it. thanks

I miss this Mag , I am a 29 year old hot rodder , and the thin s they do in that magizine would just hit home with me. I dont have a ton of cash, and I felt like the guys in CARtoons were like my best friends. They have done everything from making a mess building model cars ,to degreasing engine parts in the bathroom tub. PLEASE write me back at amace3@juno.com so we can talk about getting me some issues thanks Tony.

I am excited to find all the cool Cartoons and Trosley info I did out here today. It was a sad day when I could no longer buy Cartoons, but wasn't until about 4 years ago that I realized I no longer had all the issue I had when I was younger, and started buying them here and there at comic book shows/shops, etc. Recently started looking on ebay, and have bought quite a few. Waiting on a lot of 17 to come right now. Thanks for all the effort you have put into this. Cartoons seems to be 1 of those facet of my youth I refuse to give up. Of course my wife CANNOT understand why I pay up to 10 or 15 bucks an issue for an old magazine, but I guess if you don't get it, you just won't get it.

I wish peterson would bring em back alive, dennis ellefson needs work! besides, i'd hate to think what krass and bernie are doing now, with no steady comic strip to support their hot-rod-a-day habit. Admittedly, the mag lost it's edge a bit at the end, an i didn't like some of the newer artists styles, but i'd still have bought it, damn it! Lets start a petiton, or maybe write some angry letters to the government, in a dark room, on recycled newsprint, with a typewriter that's missing the "e" key! Lets just get em back where they belong, on the newsstands (ps. did you hear pete millar may be bringing back Drag cartoons? Just a rumour i'm sure, but still - a glimmer of hope on the horizon. -john ps. if you're talking to krass & bernie ask them why they never wrote back telling me when i could ride in thier nifty vw beetle dragster. i'm still waiting guys!

I collected a few of these comics when I was 15 or 16 years old. I really liked the artwork and the iron ons (which are still in my mags!) and the how-to sections. Recently, in one of my VW Trends magazines, I saw a cartoon done by George Trosley. I re ognized the art before I saw his name. I have seen a few more since then, but not recently. I love CARtoons and am very impressed by this site; it takes me back to my childhood in the blink of a christmas tree! I am a comic strip artist myself and was inspired by Trosley and his contemporaries in my youth; all I ever draw is cars and wild hot r d concepts! I hoped to become a CARtoonist as a profession, but unfortunately the last issue came to pass when I was only 14 years old. Hopefully some day all of us gearhead doodlers can put together another auto humor mag...it may not match the caliber of our beloved old favorite, but it's definitely worth a shot! Anyways, great page; keep up the good work.

I have looked through comic book stores with no luck. Let me know how many other issues you have. If I can find my old issues I will let you know. I still enjoy Steve Austin's work in Chevy High Performance. Do you know of any Steve Austin web sites or anything else about him? Dave Deal was also great. Please keep in touch. I am stil anxiously awaiting the return of Cartoons. Do you know of anything or any plans on this?

Cartoons changed my life... The How To Draw pieces Trosley did got me interested in drawing cars, and gave me a way to practice. Now, twenty years, and a trip through the Joe Kubert School later I'm a moderately well-known funny animal cartoonist, and am bout to have my first comic published in an anthology by Shanda Fantasy Arts. (MAGIC CARPET - hits the stands, this july)It's easy to see Trosley's influence on my comic work, tho I tend to think that I have my own individual style.. Anyway, nice to see CARtoons on the web. Back when the magazine dried up, I did a bunch of websearches for various artists that had been published in it, and turned up nothing... Very cool to see you've made the digital leap. Does this mean the mag's gonna be coming back? Cheers. -c*

Dude-Your site is way cool and really brought back some memories. I had several copies of CARtoons confiscated during jr. high classes, hidden behind text books, apparently they werent approved curriculum. You did a nice job with all the old covers. My uncl turned me on to CARtoons in the summer of 1971 when i took a trip with him in his Peterbilt and read them in the sleeper while we rolled along.I'd love to start collecting them at least a few ,to pass on to my 9 month old son, the little varmint. I have always said, in regular conversation, when refering to a group of people that were somehow led by a male figure"well if it aint Unk and them varmints" all my life I have used this phrase and very few people know what the %&^# I'm talkin' about. Thanks for big smile today, and thanks for your efforts-Peace , Lou

Jeez!!! For once someone finally remembers 'CARtoons' for what it was. I use to have every issue up until the time I went in the service, then while I was gone, my dad started giving my stuff away(r/c air mags, model kits, BATMAN items, my Schwinn, etc) I on't know if he ever hung onto them for me. I use to draw Unk and the Varmints for my own pleasure even to the point of putting them on my slot car case(that disappeared when we moved. HMMMMMMM!!!?) I even used "Munchin Melvin"( I think the name is right) on a book report cover for an art class in high school. Now I'm interested in doodling these characters again for decorations on my garage wall and my office, but remembering how they looked stopped me until I saw your site. Sorry I can't tell you more, i 's been so long ago. Now I have some form of reference(s) to go by. Thanks. (Charlie at Nightwing-Tech)

I worked on "Car-Toons" as a layout man and artist from about 1986 to the last issue in 91'. Dennis Ellefson used to stay with me and my family whenever he used to visit San Francisco and the bay area, we used to attend the big Oakland comic-con together oo...I miss that guy, he was a very supportive, kind and generous friend. I guess I'm the last artist to contribute to the Car-Toons legacy, Petersen (E-Map) hired me to do a signed open edition poster with all the old characters for sale in their automot ve magazines. The poster is now out and being offered for sale in issue #2 of "Hot Rod Deluxe# on the stands now. The original concept for the poster is to guage the popularity of the title, if the poster sells well, they may bring the title back.BUY THE OSTER. no I don't make money on this, it was a work for hire deal and I've made what I'm gonna make. I just want the title to come back partly as a legacy for Den-Den. Please e-mail me with any comments but if you want to buy the poster you gotta do it th ough Hot Rod Deluxe or E-Map (Petersen).

It really is too bad that I do not remember most of what I read and saw in the few issues of CARtoons that I did see, it was too many years ago. I am now 19 years old. The only issue I even vaguely remember is the one that had a drawing of a "COORS" beer an with racing slicks and a supercharged V8 driven by an ant. I have no idea which issue this was, but I wish that I could get my hands on a copy.

I see you were looking for Shawn Kerri. I know she did some art work for the Hard Core group Circle Jerks back in the early 80's. So I would think she should still be in the L.A. area. I wouldn't doubt if she would be an illustration or art teacher so ewhere. I'm going to do a web search for her. She did some great work.

Man this site brought back memories. I started collecting CARtoons when I was 10 years old. I still have all my issues packed away in plastic at my parents' house. If you put up some examples of Bibby's work, put up one of the stories he would do about the three brothers and the sister. Fun s

Just came across the ad for CARtoons 2000 on the website. Will be sending lots of B & W stuff, hoping to get my own website soon. I have had art published in Streetrodder, and have designed ads for several rod shops that have appeared in Rod and Custom Streetrodder, Custom Rodder, etc.

I owe a lot to CARtoons with regard to my artistic capabilities. If it weren't for George's How To section, I'd never have learned to draw cars. I'd sure love to see CARtoons make a comeback!
