THE BIRTH OF

HOME ENTERTAINMENT CENTER

When I get an idea for a painting I try to see it in my mind’s eye as many different ways as possible… even ones I don’t especially like. Sometimes a subtle little twist will appear and add a little more zing to the piece. I try to stay open to anything until I finally choose what I feel will be the best way to visually present my idea.

1. Lotsa time spent here – the finished tracing. I move the various parts drawn separately around under the tracing paper until I get them where I want them and then trace them into the detailed sketch… also lotsa photos.

2. With the use of a light table I then trace my tracing paper sketch onto good paper with ink…

3. As carefully as I can. It takes hours… I curse violently at any little mistake but eventually get it all inked in neatly.

4. Now the color – I often start with the chrome. I dig doing chrome and it’s a nice way to start the coloring process. Then I take on the next tricky thing… the roadster’s paint and upholstery.

5. The primer on the Merc is next… spotlighting the body’s “worked areas” Also – purple is added to the chopper in the back.

6. It takes forever but each little part in the garage gets attention… a shadow… a reflection… dirt and grease… french fries.

7. More and more detail and just before my fingers fall off… it’s finished!
