It was 1965. I was eighteen and had just put the last hundred of the thousand break-in miles on the freshly rebuilt flathead in my “39 Ford driving it from Pennsylvania to Cecil County Dragoway in Maryland. I ran it in N/Stock and blew the competition away with a blistering E.T. of 19.76 – 68.07 MPH!!! Unfortunately, they ran my class right after they had built up to Gartlis and Prudhomme blasting down the strip at over 190 MPH. My brother said I looked like Gartlis’ pushcar following him after his run. We drove the car back home with the trophy and bolted the seat belt back in my mother’s Impala without her ever noticing it was missing. It’s cliché but those were the days…
